Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The Mammoth

When is the Mammoth releasing?

The Mammoth and the Mammoth Leaf are releasing on December 27th at 5 PM EST.

What is the difference between the Mammoth, the Mammoth Leaf, and the Special Edition Mammoth?

The Mammoth is our flagship woolen jacket with all the bells and whistles.

The Mammoth's Leaf is part of The Iron Snail's "Leaf Line". We lower the cost of Leaf garments by making small production method modifications while still keeping our pieces heirloom level. Instead of changing manufacturers, using cheaper materials, etc., we restructure our garments. Our Leaf Line Mammoth is built for slightly warmer weather (it's built closer to a classic cruiser jacket). We're using slightly lighter-weight wool (27 oz. vs 28 oz.), we removed the Wind Wall liner and removed the storm cuffs. We also will stick to (mostly) solid colors instead of patterns in order to increase fabric yield.

The Leaf Line Mammoth is just as tough, just as well built, and still incredibly warm. The construction level is closer to what timber cruisers of the early 20th century were wearing.

The Special Edition and Sartorial Mammoths are designed in collaboration with Sam Goates of Woven in the Bone. This line seeks to experiment with rare and highly textured fabrics from the archives of fabric mills around the world. These runs are produced in much smaller quantities and will change throught the years as we continue to experiment. Since these fabrics vary largely, please be sure to read the entire description on the product page to make sure the wool type is suitable for your activities.

Is the Special Edition Mammoth returning?

Yes, the Special Edition Mammoth will return - but not at the same time as this year's Mammoth release. The Special Edition is slated to release in higher quantities during Q1 2025.

How does the Mammoth fit?

We highly recommend you take your favorite jacket and a measuring tape (a fabric measuring tape is best) to check for each of the dimensions listed on the Mammoth's size guide. This size guide is located on the product page for the Mammoth jackets. You can then take your measurements and compare which size would fit the best.

Before the upcoming batch of Mammoths are live, we'll show you how we measure with photographs and a video - just to be safe.

What size should I pick if I'm between sizes?

We recommend sizing up, as it would be a shame to be limited on how much you can layer under the Mammoth as opposed to being able to only layer with a small number of garments.

What temperatures can I wear the Mammoth in?

The Mammoth is built for harsh winters through and through. All Mammoth jackets are built for winter wear and sub-freezing temperatures, but a specific temperature guide is a bit hard to quantify due to whether you personally run hotter or colder. The most important factor here is deciding how you'll wear your Mammoth and the activities you're planning to engage in while wearing it.

We always recommend layering properly: a base layer, a mid-layer, and the Mammoth will have you set in an extreme variety of temperatures no matter which line you are interested in. If you're planning on doing strenuous physical activity in your Mammoth, your layering system will be an absolute necessity, as you'll be a little too toasty. However, if you're spending long amounts of time outdoors with little to no movement, it's best to beef up your mid-layer and let the Mammoth battle the outer elements.

What kind and how many pockets does the Mammoth have?

There are 3 outer button pockets, 1 outer stash pocket, and two internal welt pockets. Two hand warmer pockets are located behind the lower outer button pockets.

Does the Mammoth feature a map pocket?

The Primordial Mammoth does not include a map pocket located along the rear of the jacket. This is to protect the 9 oz. lining layer sandwiched between two layers of our 28 oz. main body fabric and to keep out any sneaking winds.

The Leaf Line Mammoth includes a map pocket, as it's more of a traditional style jacket.

How is the Mammoth constructed?

The Primordial, Special Edition, and Sartorial Mammoths utilize our WindWall technology. The entire back of the jacket, along with the front top half of the jacket uses three layers of wool. The easiest way to think of this layering is by picturing a sandwich with one slice of cheese in-between. We have a 28 oz. layer of wool on the outside of the Mammoth (the bottom piece of bread), a 9 oz. worsted fine wool layer under that (the cheese), and another layer of 28 oz. wool under that (the top piece of bread).

The front pockets of the Mammoth make the jacket mostly triple-layered and in a few spots, quadruple layered. This construction is focused on stopping the wind from getting to your final layer of wool, acting as unencumbered insulation. This is all accented by Merino storm cuffs, corozo nut buttons, a large collar meant to be flipped up, and a snap lever inside of its stash pocket.

Our Leaf Line Mammoth is a very similar construction, but it goes on without the 9 oz. worsted lining in-between layers of wool. The back of the jacket is double-layered (via the map pocket), and the front of the jacket is mostly double-layered via the front pockets.

I'm unhappy with my purchase. What can I do?

If you're unsatisfied with the fit or construction of the jacket, we do offer returns and exchanges based on availability. For more information about all of that, see https://theironsnail.us/pages/returns-and-exchanges.

We'll do our best to make sure you are taken care of!

Order Questions

Who can I contact for support with an order or product?

You can contact us at inquiries@theironsnail.us. Our small team will get back to you as soon as we can!

What size should I purchase?

We recommend measuring a garment you like that is similar to the garment you want to purchase. Lay the item flat and use a fabric measuring tape and compare the results with the size chart to identify the best fit for you.

Do you ship internationally?

We do support international shipping - but we unfortunately aren't able to cover the cost of any customs, clearances, or duty fees. We ask that you take that into consideration before placing an order so you don't get any unexpected costs in the future.

Do you take returns or exchanges?

We do support returns and exchanges, but there are limitations to both options. For more information, see Returns, Exchanges, and the Like.

An item I want is listed as "Coming Soon" - is there any way to get a time estimate for when an item will release?

We recommend subscribing to the newsletter or keeping an eye on the blog (found in the top banner of the website) as we will always provide updates for upcoming product releases and estimated timelines when they're available.

The Mammoth (Primordial, Undyed, and Leaf)

Updated: January 3rd, 2025

The Pine Needle Mammoth and Leaf Line Mammoth are expected to be finished and shipped to our warehouse by the first or second week of January (The Leaf Line shipped out to the warehouse today), while the Toasted Clove and Undyed Mammoth are slated for the end of January.

Our warehouse is pretty snappy so they usually ship pieces out 2 - 3 days after receiving them!

Special Edition (Sartorial) Mammoth

Updated: October 19th, 2024

Sam is aiming to ship me the body fabric in December. We’re waiting on an update for the exit mill date of the lining, but in the meantime... I thought I’d show you something cool. This was a bit of a surprise (and I’ve only mentioned it to this group, so don’t go leaking it to the press), but Sam and I developed two tartans together and registered them with the Scottish Register of Tartans.

You can find them here:

We’re aiming to have the linings finished around the same time as the body fabrics, but I’ll keep you updated as we press forward.
