This version of our Mammoth is a tribute to woolen jackets of old: complete with a map pocket (that may now be best suited to mittens), button cuffs for rolling up if the going gets tough, a stash pocket with a brass snap lever, and dual top-loading/handwarmer pockets. What is our Leaf Line?

You’re currently viewing our Leaf line of clothing. The goal of the Leaf line is to offer our silhouettes at a lower cost without compromising on fabric quality, manufacturing location, or anything of the sort. Instead, we look for ways to lower costs, such as: using non-selvedge denim instead of selvedge, using fabrics without patterns so our fabric yield is higher, removing linings to make pieces for slightly warmer weather, sticking to more traditional materials, etcetera.

Our Leaf line products are made in the same factories, have the same fit, some of the same details as our Primordial line, and are all guaranteed to be of outstanding quality.

How did we lower the cost? Simply put, we crafted a Mammoth for slightly warmer weather. Our Primordial Mammoth is an absolute tank, no doubt about that. However, not everybody needs or wants a monster woolen jacket on their back. Enter The Mammoth’s Leaf, a slightly less monstrous woolen jacket. Still heavier than most of our competitors, built from a solid fortress of wool, our Mammoth’s Leaf has a classic “map pocket” in lieu of our Wind Wall technology, and it has trucker-style button cuffs in lieu of the Merino storm cuffs.

It’d be silly to look at the Mammoth’s Leaf as a downgrade to our Primordial Mammoth—it’s an alternative. This structure of woolen jacket has kept loggers and outdoorsmen cozy and warm in foul weather for around 200 years and counting. Choosing between the Primordial Mammoth and the Mammoth’s Leaf isn’t easy, especially since we believe a lot of you will find The Mammoth’s Leaf to be your new favorite piece.

The Tale of The Mammoth

The Tale of The Mammoth is the first part of "The Lore Series". "The Lore Series" covers the lore of The Iron Snail far before The Prologue and Chapter Series began. Tales of the mightiest creatures in all universes will reside here, a necessary backstory to understand all of the Snail's powers.

The purchase of a Mammoth will also include:

A booklet of the tale (with blank pages to be used as a notebook) and a Mammoth patch.

The Woolen Outer

"The Mammoth’s Leaf" is crafted from double-layered (front pockets and back map pocket) 27-oz./LY 2x2 twill melton wool, woven exclusively for The Iron Snail. The inaugural edition of "The Mammoth’s Leaf" features a marled green wool, inspired by carefully walking over wet and squishy moss in the forests of New England (where the wool was spun into yarn and woven).

This fantastically dense wool is designed to endure the harshest elements effortlessly while remaining breathable, fire-resistant, and antibacterial. Moreover, it provides insulation even when wet. This wool is woven to last, and last, and last.

The Snap Lever

We can’t make a Mammoth without a good ol’ solid brass snap lever. Snap on a neon orange whistle, your keys, a keychain of something we wouldn’t understand, or even a pocket knife. Our stash pocket is designed for quick access and angled to prevent your precious items from slipping out when you bend down to pick something up.

The Locking Collar

Even further north of your action clip is the collar. A collar, of course, is something to be expected on any jacket and may not seem special at first. 

However, upon further inspection, this one is. Built to either lay flat or be popped up to protect the wearer's neck from the elements, the collar comes with an extra horn button sewn on in order to fasten it closed when in stormy weather. These same horn buttons are sewn throughout the jacket, securing pockets and the main placket.

Toss on a hat of any sort and along with the locked collar, you can walk around with a covered and warm face, even sans scarf.

The Map Pocket

Ah, the legendary map pocket! The Primordial Mammoth goes without one to better seal against the wind and to protect the worsted woolen lining. However, the Mammoth’s Leaf is fair game for the addition. If we say "map pocket," someone else will say "game pocket." Pick your poison.

We generally lean toward the idea that a game pocket will be waxed or coated for easy cleaning, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put whatever you’d like in your jacket. A map pocket is wonderful for a few reasons: the first being that it allows you to store large items in your jacket without having to open it and expose yourself to the bitter cold. Beyond that, it provides an even weight distribution along your back for better balance and adds an extra layer of wool to keep you warm. Toss your mittens, books, maps, iPads, shell boxes, or whatever it may be back there.

The Hardiest Nut

Vegetable ivory— that's what they call it these days. Some refer to them as tagua buttons, while others prefer the term corozo nut buttons. 

Tagua nuts have been carved into figurines, coins, buttons, etc., for the better part of forever. But what exactly is it? According to Wikipedia, 

"Vegetable ivory or tagua nut is a product made from the very hard white endosperm of the seeds of certain palm trees."

Simply put, corozo nut buttons are individually unique, incredibly hard, lightweight, sustainable, and biodegradable. It's no wonder they were some of the most popular buttons used worldwide in the 1930s. 

Here's a fun fact: a tagua palm can take 15 years to mature, but once it does, it can produce tagua nuts for up to 100 years.
