Finally, we’ve plunked our spade into the topsoil of Planet Pants. These are our Chapter 1’s Leaf jeans: straight fit, high rise, and 100% made in the USA with 12oz denim from Louisiana (using some very legendary machines — more on that below). These jeans come out of the gate raw; if you’re new to the world of raw denim, their rigidity might surprise you. Don’t fret—after a few wears, they’ll soften up, lose their stiffness, and begin to form to your body.

So, we present to you Chapter 1’s Leaf, constructed from 12oz American denim. Starting completely raw, these jeans will fade uniquely to your body and only look better over time. The indigo will lighten and chip, the hems will fray, and the Chapter 1s will become a piece of art. Toss these on, forget about them, and go do something you’ve always wanted to do. That’s the dream, anyway.

We suggest going true to size. These will shrink around 2-3% after their first wash and dry. They’ll stretch back out to their original form only at points of stress.

Note: these jeans are a part of our Leaf Line. More information is below.

What is our Leaf Line?

Leaf Line vs. Primordial Line

You’re currently viewing our Leaf line of clothing. The goal of the Leaf line is to offer our silhouettes at a lower cost without compromising on fabric quality, manufacturing location, or anything of the sort. Instead, we look for ways to lower costs such as: using non-selvedge denim instead of selvedge, using fabrics without patterns so our fabric yield is higher, removing linings to make pieces for slightly warmer weather, sticking to more traditional materials, etcetera. Our Leaf line products are made in the same factories, have the same fit, some of the same details as our Primordial line, and are all guaranteed to be of outstanding quality.

How did we lower the cost? It’s quite easy with denim. Generally, selvedge denim, although fascinating, filled with wonderful textures and self-finished, is around four times more expensive than its non-selvedge counterpart. This is due to the speed of production and also the width of the rolls of fabric. A roll of non-selvedge denim is generally two times wider than selvedge denim (half the fabric for double the cost). Of course, that doesn’t mean we didn’t go far beyond the grade. Hailing from the great state of Louisiana is our 12oz raw denim with an incredibly beautiful indigo hue and a fair amount of hairy texture (caused by short cotton fibers that were purposely not burned off in the finishing process of denim). This denim, while firm and the slightest bit rigid upon the first touch, will soften up quickly and flow easily. Twelve-ounce denim is the industry standard weight for a reason; it’s near perfection. While not selvedge, this may well be many a customer’s favorite denim.

A signature of our newly minted jeans is hemp pocket bags. On our leaf line, we use a 55% hemp, 45% cotton blended 7oz twill. This allows us to balance the insane added strength of using hemp, with the affordability of cotton. Why use hemp at all? There is an age-old problem the world is lazily trying to solve: holes in pockets. There must be a million ways to do it; some involve moving seams, others involve using ballistic nylon. Our way involves hemp. We at Iron Snail HQ are good friends with a scientist named Zach. Zach tests our fabrics when they need to be tested and most recently, hemp needed to be tested (full blog post here). We knew hemp was stronger than cotton, but the question was, how much? The answer to that was: quite a bit. We found that, for the most part, our lightweight hemp samples were almost as strong as our heavy-weight cotton samples. This means that if we used hemp at all in our fabrics, we could keep our pocket bags flowy and silky while also far surpassing their cotton counterparts in strength and tear resistance. Scroll down for more information on what makes hemp so magical.

The Tale

Each and every piece made by The Iron Snail comes with its own tale, hence The Tale of The Iron Snail. Our Leaf Line comes with its own separate story and is a part of Iron Snail lore. Your Chapter 1s will come with a small booklet — contained in the booklet is, of course, The Leaf Line Lore, but also, a care guide on how to best treat your denim.

The Hemp/Cotton Pocket Bags

Tagging along with the denim on the Chapter 1 jeans are two pocket bags made of 55% hemp and 45% cotton. Why use hemp? To prevent holes in pockets as much as possible! Hemp is a bast fiber, while cotton is a seed fiber. Seed fibers are incredibly light, soft, and flowy—they are designed to carry seeds into the great beyond so the plant can spread and thrive. Bast fibers, on the other hand, come from the outer layer of a plant's stem and generally act as a layer of armor. This armor defends against disease, pests, strong winds, rain, and whatever else is thrown at plants like hemp. With all that in mind, it’s easy to understand why hemp is one of the strongest natural fibers in the world. Not only is it strong, but it’s also moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating, antibacterial, and incredibly eco-friendly—especially compared to cotton.

The Denim

Chapter 1’s Leaf jeans use 12oz American denim. As previously stated, this denim weight will be very familiar to you, although coming out of the box, it’ll be raw. If you’ve never worn raw denim before, it’ll be slightly crisp and a bit stiffer than pre-washed denim. Although, as the term “pre-wash” implies, the only difference between this and “store brand denim” is a wash! Wear these jeans raw, enjoy the feeling, wash them, and watch the fades come in, the texture come out, and the denim soften right up to feel cozy-wozy.

The Leather Patch

Our leather patch comes from S.B. Foot Tanning Company out in the great state of Minnesota! Condition the patch regularly, be wary of machine drying your pants, and let nature take it’s course. The patch will develop a gorgeous patina over time that’ll only get better and better.

The Back Pocket Embroidery

First started in the 1800s by a brand that rhymes with “wee thighs,” a unique back pocket embroidery is a must for a pair of jeans. We opted for a dark blue thread for this batch to keep things subtle. At first, the embroidery may appear as a simple two lines, but look closer! Our tiny snail friend making its way across the pocket. As your denim fades this line of stitching will subtly begin to reveal itself. We’ve opted for a slightly lighter blue thread than the denim in an unwashed state to allow the thread to color to better match the denim after its first wash.

Great Jeans

Great jeans. Why buy a nameless product made by AI when you can buy something with story, character, meaning & purpose behind it.

I don't write reviews ever

Hi there friends! I am a longtime personal style enthusiast and also a petite woman! Here I am LOVING my first pair of Iron Snail denim. I went with the smallest option (I am a street 4 or 27 or a small) and had them hemmed. The experience wearing these beautifully made jeans is unparalleled. The weave is superior to my other pairs of jeans and I am loving the experience of breaking them in. It's a total win in my book, do not hesitate. Own them!

High Quality Jeans

Excellent pair of jeans. The raw denim is stiff when you get them but it is still soft, comfortable, and breaks in quickly.

For reference I am 5ft 7in, jacked and stacked. I can weigh anywhere from 155-180 depending on if I am on the cut or the bulk. At the time of purchase and the initial wears I was ~162, 25in thighs and 39in glutes. My measurements are 29-30waist and 28inseam. I am a leg day enjoyer so this often creates a problem for finding pants that fit. I am, for the most part, limited to athletic fit or relaxed fit pants and will have to size up in the waist for the pants to fit my glutes and thighs. I went with a 32x30 and the fit is on point at my current weight. Though, on the bulk, I believe the straight fit may not be ideal.

After a wash, they did end up shrinking just enough to where I do not have to get the length tailored, the waist is nearly the same as pre wash.
The high rise fit is immaculate and highlights the glutes in the best way possible, these are seriously good looking jeans and can easily be dressed up or down. The indigo is deep and rich, holding up incredibly well after some washes. I am not able to attest to the durability, however, if the snail is indeed iron, they should last a very long time.
Overall, these jeans are high quality. Highly recommend.
