Introducing the first collaboration between The Iron Snail & Unbleached Apparel. This is, The Undyed Mammoth. For this collaboration, we've wandered off to the UK, stopping at the 243-year-old legendary mill, Marling & Evans. Marling & Evans is a specialty mill, only using naturally colored wools finished without any chemical additives. They are, without a doubt, peerless in their expertise.

The Undyed Mammoth is precisely what it sounds like, completely undyed. You're gazing upon a 22-oz./LY mix of the horned Jacob sheep and the Welsh Mountain Black Sheep with a matching 11-oz./LY Wind Wall lining. The wool is 100% undyed, utilizing the natural color of the two sheep breeds. Furthermore, this Mammoth's labeling system is made from woven Fox Fibre (a naturally colored cotton), the included patch is a debossed vegetable-tanned leather, and the buttons are made from horn.

This Mammoth's fabric is made from low-twist yarns and has a soft drape with a plush hand. While still retaining all of the properties of wool that we love (warm when wet, antibacterial, flame retardant, odor resistant), this Mammoth weave is slightly looser—meaning a Primordial Mammoth will have a slightly higher wind and rain resistance and would be suited better for extreme foul weather. Although this is absolutely no slouch and will last and protect you for a lifetime, at least.

What is The Iron Snail Experimental and Extraordinary Clothing Division?

You’re currently viewing “The Iron Snail Experimental and Extraordinary Clothing Division.” This collection features experimental and extraordinary fabrics (per the name), details, and features that we saw fit to dive into on small batch runs. In other words, you are entering the clothing nerd zone. In the case of our Mammoth jacket, we’ve partnered with Unbleached Apparel and followed their philosophy of eliminating dyes in clothing products. To do this we partnered with Marling Evans, Sally Fox, and Shaniko Wool Company. The Undyed Mammoth uses double-layered 22oz undyed wool from the UK, an 11oz wool lining from the same source, undyed knit storm cuffs, Wind Wall Technology, horn buttons, and much more.

Further information on all materials is provided below this dropdown menu, but we’d like to take a moment to describe Wind Wall Technology in more depth, as it’s often misunderstood.

When looking inside a Mammoth jacket, it may appear half-lined, and at first glance, it might seem that the lining is upside down! In reality, you are seeing three layers of wool, each with a specific function. To explain this more simply: imagine a mighty oak table. Place a heavy, durable woolen cloth over the table, followed by a lighter but densely woven woolen cloth, and finally, a second layer of heavy woolen cloth. Sew all of that into a jacket, leaving the sleeves free from the third and final layer, and you have our Mammoth. Combined in this way, the Mammoth features a hidden front cape and a full double-paneled back, making it significantly more wind-resistant and warm compared to many other jackets on the market, even at a similar weight.

We are one of the few companies (and perhaps among the first, though, who’s to say) to line a wool jacket with more wool instead of polyester, cotton, rayon, or other materials. Our reason for doing this is to use the lining as an additional layer of insulation, not just as a buffer between your skin and the rougher outer wool. The outer wool layer is designed to shield you from wind, rain, branches, and more. The lining serves to further block the wind and add warmth (with finer fibers providing an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio), and the third inner wool layer acts solely as an additional insulating barrier.

We believe we’re the only ones to layer a wool jacket this way. Traditionally, a wool cape or double layer of wool is placed on the outside of the jacket, leaving it unlined (see our Leaf Line Mammoth). There’s nothing wrong with constructing a wool jacket like that—we’re doing it ourselves with other designs. However, Wind Wall Technology makes a wool jacket more efficient, warmer, and more comfortable, all at once.

It also allows us to conduct some exciting experiments, which we’ll be unveiling in the near future.

The Tale of The Mammoth

The Tale of The Mammoth is the first part of "The Lore Series". "The Lore Series" covers the lore of The Iron Snail far before The Prologue and Chapter Series began. Tales of the mightiest creatures in all universes will reside here, a necessary backstory to understand all of the Snail's powers.

The purchase of a Mammoth will also include:

A booklet of the tale (with blank pages to be used as a notebook) and a Mammoth patch.

The Undyed Woolen Outer

"The Mammoth" is crafted from double-layered 22-oz./LY wool, with reinforced front pockets and a Wind Wall. The inaugural edition of, "The Undyed Mammoth," comes in a rich, deep brown and beige— the colors of nature, baby! This wool, like the sheep it comes from, is incredibly hardy and can endure brutal temperatures and conditions.

As mentioned above, The Undyed Mammoth is formidable in any environment. However, if you frequently face grueling storms, we suggest checking out our Primordial Mammoth, which features high-twist yarns and a denser weave for even greater resilience.

The Perfectly Suited Lining

Touching your skin is an 11-oz./LY woven wool lining crafted from the same fibers as the body fabric. We've applied a pressed finish to smooth the fabric and push stray fibers down, making the lining more comfortable while allowing the sleeves to glide better over your mid-layer.

What are the benefits? By exclusively using wool fibers, we’ve been able to modify the traditional structure of a woolen jacket to keep it sleek yet exceptionally warm (more on that later). This also ensures it’s comfortable enough to wear with just a T-shirt.

The yarns used in the lining are finer and more densely woven than those in the body fabric. This enhances wind and water resistance, provides a smoother handfeel, and gives the Mammoth a significant warmth boost, especially in foul weather. In fact, the liner, protected by the woolen outer layer, outperforms standard wool in terms of warmth-to-weight ratio.

No kidding!

The Wind Wall

Ah, 'Wind Wall Technology', something we're quite proud of! As mentioned earlier, we've chosen to craft this jacket entirely from 100% wool, giving us the flexibility to rearrange the typical layout (layers) of a wool jacket. Let us elaborate. We've meticulously placed the jacket's lining between the main body fabric and an interior chest and back plate made of wool. We gushingly refer to this as 'Wind Wall Technology.' The outermost layer of wool shields against the elements, the lining further stops the wind, and the interior wool plates (crafted from the outer fabric) act as unencumbered insulation. You could think of 'Wind Wall Technology' as an additional woolen blanket inside your jacket. Imagine an internal cape coat with an extra layer of warmth in between.

The Mighty Storm Cuff

Hidden inside of the sleeves are storm cuffs. Knit specially for us in Massachusetts. The cuffs are a midweight 1x1 ribbed Merino from the legendary Shaniko Wool Company, the first U.S. Farm Group to supply certified wool under the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS). The cuffs grip your wrists and create a gentle seal around them. A.k.a. these cuffs are sewn in to prevent wind, rain, and snow from entering your sleeves. Nobody likes that.

Note: here we're showing dyed cuffs from our Primordial Line. The Undyed Mammoth will feature cream colored, undyed Merino cuffs. Our sample is using a temporary fabric and we'd rather avoid the confusion!

The Handy Action Clip

North of the storm cuffs and tucked into the left pocket is an action clip—a brass clip that allows you to hang your gloves, mittens, whistles, keys, or whatever else you may have from your jacket while you focus on other matters (like fending off all the compliments on your jacket). On the top left corner of the clip is an extra drilled hole meant for a keyring, so you can add any accessory you wish.

We've included the action clip with exploration in mind, but we're eager to see what you decide to snap on.

We're particularly fond of those tiny jean keychains that you can get from many Japanese denim manufacturers.

On a more serious note, a neon orange whistle will probably come in handy one day if you're an explorer.

The Locking collar

Even further north of your action clip is the collar. A collar, of course, is something to be expected on any jacket and may not seem special at first.

However, upon further inspection, this one is. Built to either lay flat or be popped up to protect the wearer's neck from the elements, the collar comes with an extra horn button sewn on in order to fasten it closed when in stormy weather. These same horn buttons are sewn throughout the jacket, securing pockets and the main placket.

Toss on a hat of any sorts and along with the locked collar, you can walk around with a covered and warm face, even sans scarf.

The Real Horn

Often used in fine suiting, we've opted to use genuine horn buttons on 'The Undyed Mammoth'. We wanted buttons that blended into our fabric but finding buttons without plastic or dyes that achieved the same variance was quite tough, until...horn! Perhaps there are some more tricks up our sleeves that we'll introduce later as well.

Real horn (typically from either water buffalo or ox) is a by-product of the farming industry, particularly in India and livestock is not reared specifically for their horn. Moreover, the cattle are raised by numerous small, subsistence farmers and the money they receive for their horn is a vital and additional source of income. Without it, many rural farmers would simply abandon their vocation.

Horn is, of course, a natural material and thus, no two buttons are the same. Each will have its own patterns and color variations.
